About the show

Finally indoors

Skip Tonight is BBN's animated late-night comedy show. After eleven years outside as BBN's field correspondent, Skip Waverly finally has a desk, a band and a studio audience, and he is still a little damp. The monologue is about the day's real news; everyone in it is a cartoon.

Skip Waverly

Host

For eleven years Skip Waverly was BBN's man outside. Hurricanes, blizzards, county fairs, one container ship that would not move. If it was wet, windy or both, Skip was standing in it holding a microphone.

Now the network has given him a desk, a band, a studio audience and a thermostat. He is grateful. He is also still a little damp, nobody can explain why, and he has strong opinions about the weather that nobody asked for.

Hank Ledger

Sidekick, on loan from the news division

Hank Ledger anchors BBN's news desk by day. At night he sits at a small podium beside Skip, says one or two words at a time, and keeps a running tally on a little card. Nobody knows what he is counting.

Catch Hank all day on BBN, where he says considerably more words.

Lenny Static & the Interference mid-song

Lenny Static & the Interference

The house band

Lenny Static plays a pink keytar and has never once taken off his sunglasses. The Interference are a drummer whose face is an old television, an upright bass and a trumpet. They play the theme, the walk-on, the stings and the play-off.

How a night goes

  1. The Monologue

The day's real news, told by a man who was rained on for eleven years and took notes.

  2. The Big Story

Skip at the desk with one story, a stack of cue cards and a graphic he did not approve.

  3. The Hot Seat

Tonight's guest gets the chair. The chair is fine. It is mostly dry.

  4. The Sketch

Something short and silly. On Thursdays management loans Skip back to the field, and he is furious about it.

  5. The Nightly Game

A different game every night of the week. Hank keeps score on a little card.

  6. After Hours

The Late Update and the viewers' act, once the ties come loose.

  7. Dale's Cancellation Clock

Dale Bearman from the news division counts down to the show being cancelled. Every night.

  8. Goodnight

Lenny plays us off. "Stay dry, everybody."

The fine print

Skip Tonight is satire from BBN, a parody news network. Every joke starts from a real story in the day's news. Public figures in the jokes are drawn as cartoons; nobody real is ever shown for real. Skip, Hank, Lenny, the Interference and every member of the studio audience are fictional cartoon characters.
